The confusion around wheel balancing vs alignment is completely understandable: both involve your wheels, both affect ride quality, and both are often done at the same visit. But they solve entirely different problems. Wheel balancing corrects weight distribution around a spinning wheel and tyre, while wheel alignment corrects the angles at which your tyres meet the road. Getting them mixed up can leave you paying for the wrong fix while the real fault keeps chewing through your tyres.
What wheel balancing actually does
Every tyre-and-wheel assembly has tiny variations in weight around its circumference. A wheel might be a few grams heavier on one side because of the valve stem, casting tolerances, or how the tyre was manufactured. At low speed you never notice it, but a wheel turning at 1,000 rpm on the motorway throws that heavy spot outward with real force many times a second.
Wheel balancing (also called tyre balancing) fixes this. The wheel is mounted on a spin balancer that measures exactly where the heavy spots are, and the technician clips or sticks small lead or zinc counterweights to the rim to cancel them out. There are two types of imbalance the machine corrects:
- Static imbalance is a single heavy spot that makes the wheel hop up and down. It causes a vertical bounce.
- Dynamic imbalance is weight unevenly spread across the width of the tyre, which makes the wheel wobble side to side (a shimmy).
A proper spin balance corrects both. The classic sign that balancing is needed is a steering wheel vibration that appears at a specific speed, usually 90 to 120 km/h, and often fades again as you go faster or slower. What wheel alignment actually does
Wheel alignment has nothing to do with weight. It is about the geometry of your suspension and the precise angles your tyres sit at relative to the road and to each other. Over time, hitting kerbs, potholes, and speed bumps, or simply the wear of suspension bushings and ball joints, nudges these angles out of the manufacturer's specification.
There are three angles a technician sets:

Toe is the angle that wears tyres fastest and is the most common one to drift out. A car with the toe out of spec can scrub a set of tyres down to the cords in a few thousand kilometres, even though the tyres are otherwise fine. The tell-tale sign of an alignment problem is the car pulling to one side on a flat, straight road, a steering wheel that sits crooked when you drive straight, or uneven tyre wear across the tread.

The simplest rule of thumb: if the car shakes, think balancing; if the car pulls or wears tyres unevenly, think alignment. A vibration is a balance problem until proven otherwise, and a pull is an alignment problem until proven otherwise.
How to tell which one you need
Work through this quick self-check before you book anything:
- Find a flat, straight, quiet road. Bring the car to a steady cruising speed with your hands lightly on the wheel.
- Note any vibration and when it starts. A shimmy that comes in around 90-120 km/h and is felt through the steering wheel points to balancing.
- Briefly relax your grip (only where safe). If the car drifts steadily to one side on level ground, that points to alignment.
- Check the steering wheel position when driving dead straight. If the logo sits off-centre, the alignment is out.
- Inspect your tyres. Run your palm across the tread. Smooth, even wear is good; a sawtooth feel across the blocks suggests toe misalignment; wear on just one edge suggests camber; random scalloped dips suggest imbalance or a worn shock.

How often should you do each?
They run on very different schedules because they respond to different things.
- Balancing is done every time a tyre is fitted, and again if a wheel weight falls off or you develop a new vibration. Many drivers have their wheels rebalanced at rotation intervals, roughly every 8,000-10,000 km, because tyre wear shifts the balance over time.
- Alignment should be checked at least once a year, whenever you fit new tyres, after any heavy kerb or pothole impact, and whenever you replace suspension or steering components such as tie rods, control arms, or shocks.
Always get an alignment done after balancing when both are needed, and always balance new tyres before an alignment so the technician is not chasing a vibration that a weight would have solved.
What it costs and what to watch for
Balancing is cheap: expect around $10-$20 per wheel, or $40-$80 for a full set, often bundled free with new tyres. A four-wheel alignment typically runs $75-$120, while a cheaper front-only (two-wheel) alignment is $45-$70 but is only appropriate on some vehicles. Be cautious of two things. First, a balance that will not hold usually means a bent rim, a tyre with an internal defect, or a stuck-on weight that has fallen off, not a machine problem. Frequently asked questions
Can wheel balancing fix a car that pulls to one side?
No. A steady pull on flat ground is a geometry problem, almost always toe or camber, and it needs a wheel alignment, not balancing. Balancing only cancels out vibration caused by uneven weight in the spinning wheel. Pulling can occasionally come from unequal tyre pressures or a dragging brake, so check those first, but if the car still drifts, book an alignment.
Do I need an alignment every time I get new tyres?
It is strongly recommended. Fitting new tyres is the ideal moment to check alignment because misaligned angles will wear that fresh, expensive rubber unevenly within a few thousand kilometres. At the very least, ask the fitter to measure the alignment; if the toe and camber are within spec, no adjustment is needed and you have simply confirmed the tyres are protected.
Why does my steering wheel still vibrate after balancing?
If a vibration survives a fresh balance, the imbalance was probably not the cause.
