- Uneven or rapid tyre wear. One edge of a tyre wears far faster than the other, or the tread develops a scalloped, saw-tooth pattern you can feel by running your hand across it.
- The steering wheel sits off-centre. You drive in a straight line but the wheel is cocked a few degrees to one side.
- Vibration through the steering. Misalignment makes tyres scrub and can set up a shimmy, though vibration more often points to wheel balance or a bent rim.
- Loose or wandering steering. The car feels vague and needs constant small corrections to stay in its lane.
- Squealing tyres at low speed. Badly set toe drags the tyres sideways and can make them chirp on turns.

You can gather strong evidence before booking an alignment. Do these on level ground with correctly inflated, cold tyres.
- The straight-road test. Find a flat, quiet road with no camber. Briefly loosen your grip and note whether the car drifts. Repeat on a road that slopes the other way to rule out road camber fooling you.
- The steering-wheel-centre test. Drive straight and look at the wheel. A spoke that should be level but sits tilted means the toe is out or the wheel was fitted off-centre.
- The tyre-edge feel. Run your palm lightly across each tread, both directions. Feathering feels smooth one way and sharp the other and points to toe error.
- The push-and-listen test. With the car parked, grab the top and bottom of each front tyre and rock it. Play or a clunk suggests worn ball joints or wheel bearings, which must be fixed before any alignment will hold.
- Kerb history. Think back. A recent hard pothole or kerb strike, followed by a new pull, strongly points to knocked alignment or worse.
