When a used engine is the right choice
A replacement engine makes financial sense when the rest of the car is sound but the original motor has a terminal fault: a spun bearing, a cracked block, a snapped timing belt on an interference engine, or seized internals from oil starvation. Before you commit, weigh the three realistic paths.

- Confirm transmission compatibility. The bellhousing bolt pattern and flywheel must suit your gearbox, whether manual or automatic.
- Decide long or short block. A "long block" includes the cylinder head; a "short block" is the bottom end only, meaning you reuse your own head, manifolds and ancillaries.

The physical inspection checklist
Inspect the engine cold if at all possible. A seller who has warmed it up before you arrive may be masking a difficult cold start or a knock that only appears on a cold engine. Bring a torch, gloves and a magnet.
- Oil filler cap and dipstick. Creamy, mayonnaise-like residue under the cap points to coolant mixing with oil, a classic head-gasket or cracked-head symptom. Clean amber or dark oil is normal; milky brown is a walk-away sign.
- Oil colour and level. Fresh, suspiciously clean oil on a "high-mileage" engine can mean a quick pre-sale change to hide metal particles. Rub a little between your fingers and feel for grit.
- Coolant passages. Oily film or a rainbow sheen in the coolant neck again suggests gasket failure.
- External leaks. Wet, oily patches around the sump, rear main seal, and cam cover indicate seals that will need doing during the swap.
- Corrosion and water line. A visible silt or water line on the block is a red flag for a flood or submerged salvage engine.
- Exhaust and intake ports. Heavy dry black soot suggests it ran rich; oily wet ports suggest it burned oil.
- Turbo (if fitted). Spin the compressor wheel by hand. Excessive shaft play or oil in the intake means a failing turbo, a $400 to $1,200 repair on its own.
- Timing belt or chain. Ask when the belt was last changed. An unknown-history belt on an interference engine must be replaced immediately as part of the install.
Verify mileage and history
Engine mileage is only as trustworthy as the paperwork behind it. A genuinely low-mileage used engine (say under 80,000 km / 50,000 miles) is worth a premium, but the figure is easy to claim and hard to prove.
- Ask for the donor vehicle's details and, if possible, a photo of its odometer and registration.
- Cross-check wear items: a heavily polished camshaft, worn cam-cover baffles, or a glazed, grooved crankshaft pulley do not belong on a truly low-mileage unit.
- Look at the clutch friction face (manual) or torque-converter area for wear consistent with the claimed distance.
- For imported engines sold by weight or as "low mileage JDM" stock, treat the mileage claim as marketing unless there is documentation.
A fair price scales with proven mileage and whether it comes with any warranty. Never pay top money for an unverifiable odometer figure.
Compression and leak-down: the tests that matter most
A visual check tells you a lot, but only a compression test reveals the health of the piston rings, valves and head gasket. If the seller will not allow one on an engine still in a donor car, or will not turn a bench engine over, be cautious.
- Warm the engine to operating temperature if it is in a running car (skip if bench-testing cold).
- Remove all spark plugs (petrol) or glow plugs/injectors (diesel) so the engine spins freely.
- Thread the compression gauge into the first cylinder's plug hole.
- Crank the engine four to five compression strokes with the throttle open and record the peak reading.

- Judge the spread, not just the numbers. Any cylinder more than about 10% below the others signals a weak ring, burnt valve or gasket leak.
If compression is uneven, a cylinder leak-down test pinpoints where the pressure escapes: hissing from the exhaust means an exhaust valve, from the intake means an intake valve, and bubbles in the coolant mean a head gasket. - Ask about return terms. Even a 14 to 30 day "start-up" warranty protects you against a dead unit. Get it in writing.
- Confirm what is included. Does the price cover the manifolds, injectors, alternator and starter, or is it a bare block-and-head?
- Factor labour. A professional swap runs $500 to $2,000 in labour, so a slightly dearer engine with a warranty often beats a cheap gamble.

There is no hard limit, because condition matters more than the odometer. A well-maintained engine with 150,000 km (93,000 miles) and even compression can outlast a neglected one with half that. Should I buy a long block or a short block?
Buy a long block (bottom end plus cylinder head) if your original head is damaged, warped, or has burnt valves, as it saves labour and risk.
