Car Battery Maintenance: Make Your Battery Last Longer

A practical car battery maintenance guide with real tests, cleaning steps, voltage numbers and honest cost ranges to avoid getting stranded.

A dead battery is one of the most common reasons a car refuses to start, and it almost always gives warning signs first. Good car battery maintenance is mostly about spotting those signs early: slow cranking, dim lights, and creeping corrosion on the terminals. Spend ten minutes a month on the checks below and you will get years more life from a part that is expensive and inconvenient to replace at the worst possible moment.

Most cars still use a conventional lead-acid battery (or an AGM version on stop-start models), and it typically lasts 4-6 years. Heat, deep discharges, and short trips all shorten that life. The good news is that battery care needs almost no tools and no mechanical skill.

Know what you are working with

Before you touch anything, identify your battery type, because it changes how you charge and replace it.

Fitting the wrong type, or charging an AGM battery with a basic charger, shortens its life. On many modern cars a new battery also has to be registered to the car's charging system with a diagnostic tool, or the alternator will not charge it correctly. Test the battery yourself

A multimeter costs $10-$20 and takes the guesswork out of battery health. Always test with the engine off and the car having sat for at least an hour (a "resting" voltage).

How to test resting voltage:

  1. Set the multimeter to DC volts, 20 V range.
  2. Touch the red probe to the positive (+) terminal and black to the negative (-).
  3. Read the number and compare it to the table below.

Next, watch the voltage while a helper starts the engine. It should not drop below about 9.6 V during cranking. Once running, the alternator should push the reading up to 13.8-14.7 V. If it stays near 12.5 V with the engine running, the battery is not being charged and the alternator or wiring is the real problem, not the battery. Clean the terminals and stop corrosion

Battery terminal corrosion, the white, blue or green crust around the posts, adds resistance and mimics a failing battery. Cleaning it is the single most valuable maintenance job you can do.

Step by step:

  1. Turn everything off and remove the key or fob.
  2. Loosen and disconnect the negative (-) clamp first, then the positive (+). This order avoids short circuits.
  3. Mix a teaspoon of baking soda with a little water and brush it onto the corroded metal; it fizzes as it neutralises the acid.
  4. Scrub the posts and clamps with an old toothbrush or a dedicated terminal brush.
  5. Wipe dry, then smear a thin film of petroleum jelly or dielectric grease on the posts to keep moisture out.
  6. Reconnect positive (+) first, then negative (-), and tighten firmly. A loose clamp behaves exactly like a flat battery.

Wear gloves and eye protection; battery deposits are acidic. If you see the case bulging, leaking, or smell rotten eggs, stop and replace the battery, as those are signs of internal failure.

Prevent a flat battery

Most dead batteries are not worn out; they are simply discharged. These habits keep charge in the battery:

  • Drive long enough to recharge. A cold start uses a big slug of energy. Frequent short trips of under 15 minutes never let the alternator replace it, so the battery slowly drains over weeks.
  • Kill parasitic drain. Interior lights, dashcams wired to permanent power, and phone chargers left plugged in all sip current. A healthy car draws under about 50 milliamps at rest; more than that will flatten a battery over a few days.
  • Use a trickle charger or smart maintainer if the car sits for more than a week or two. A good maintainer costs $30-$60 and keeps the battery topped up without overcharging.
  • Turn off accessories before starting so the battery's energy goes to the starter motor, not the blower and stereo.
  • Manage heat. High under-bonnet temperatures age batteries faster than cold, so shade and ventilation help in hot climates.

If your battery goes flat repeatedly, look for the cause rather than just recharging. A stuck relay, a boot or glovebox light that never switches off, or an ageing alternator will keep draining a perfectly good battery.

Jump-start safely

When you do get caught out, a correct jump-start protects both cars' electronics.

  1. Park the working car close but not touching, and switch both off.
  2. Connect red to the flat battery's positive (+), then red to the good battery's positive (+).
  3. Connect black to the good battery's negative (-), then the other black clamp to a bare metal bracket on the dead car's engine, not its negative terminal. This keeps sparks away from battery gases.
  4. Start the working car, wait two minutes, then start the dead car.
  5. Remove the clamps in reverse order and drive for at least 30 minutes to recharge.

Never jump-start a battery that is cracked, leaking or frozen. If jump leads produce nothing, the battery may be too far gone to recover.

When to replace, and what it costs

Replace the battery if it fails a load test, will not hold above 12.4 V after a full charge, is more than about five years old and cranking slowly, or shows physical damage. A capacity or load test at a parts store is usually free and is more reliable than voltage alone.
