The three things that flatten a battery

Every flat-battery case comes down to one of three problems, and separating them early saves you money:

  1. The battery itself is worn out and can no longer hold charge, even though everything charging it is fine.
  2. Something is draining it while the car is parked and switched off (a parasitic drain).
  3. The charging system is not refilling it while you drive, usually a failing alternator or a loose or corroded belt or cable.

A fourth, quieter cause is simply not driving enough. Short trips and long gaps between drives never give the alternator time to replace what starting the engine took out, so the battery slowly discharges over weeks. If your car sits for days at a time, suspect this before condemning any parts.

Start with the battery's age and health

Most lead-acid car batteries last three to five years. If yours is older than that and keeps going flat, it is the prime suspect. Before buying anything, do two quick checks.

Hunt down a parasitic drain

If the battery is sound but keeps going flat overnight, you have a parasitic drain: a circuit staying awake and pulling current when it should be asleep. A normal modern car draws about 20 to 50 milliamps at rest to keep memories and alarms alive. Anything much above that will flatten a battery in days.

Common culprits include:

  • A glovebox, boot or bonnet light that never switches off because its switch has failed.
  • A faulty aftermarket accessory such as a dashcam wired to a permanent live, or a poorly installed stereo or amplifier.
  • A sticking relay or a control module that will not go to sleep.
  • Corroded or damp wiring creating a leakage path to earth.

How to measure parasitic drain

  1. Let the car sit fully locked for 30 to 60 minutes so all modules go to sleep. Rushing this step gives false high readings.
  2. Set your multimeter to measure DC amps (use the 10 A socket).
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable and connect the meter in series between the cable and the terminal, so all current flows through the meter.
  4. Read the draw. Below 50 mA is normal. If it is 100 mA or more, keep going.
  5. With the meter still connected, pull fuses one at a time from the fuse boxes. When the reading drops sharply, the circuit on that fuse contains your drain. Match the fuse number to the owner's manual to name the circuit.

Check the charging system

  • Undo the clamps (negative first), scrub the posts and clamps with a wire brush, refit tightly and smear on a little petroleum jelly to keep moisture out.
  • Check the thick earth strap from the battery to the body and engine. A corroded earth causes strange, intermittent flat-battery symptoms that are easy to miss.
  • Look for chafed wiring near the alternator and starter.
